Why is LBC test done?
Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) is a new technique for collecting cytological samples in order to detect cervical cancer. With conventional cytology a smear taker takes a sample that is applied directly to a slide for microscopic investigation.
What is approved liquid based cytology?
Liquid-based cytology (LBC) is a new method of preparing cervical samples for cytological examination. Unlike the conventional ‘smear’ preparation, it involves making a suspension of cells from the sample and this is used to produce a thin layer of cells on a slide.
What is the difference between conventional and liquid based Pap smear?
Background: Liquid-based cervical cytology was developed to improve the diagnostic reliability of Papanicolaou (Pap) smears. Conventional Pap smears can have false-negative and false-positive results because of inadequate sampling and slide preparation, and errors in laboratory detection and interpretation.
Is LBC test painful?
The test may be a little uncomfortable, but it should not be painful. However, if at any point during the examination you feel uncomfortable or in pain, you should inform the doctor or nurse straight away, and you have the right to ask for the test to stop.

Cervical screening test is an HPV test and any reflex liquid-based cytology (LBC) test done on cervical cells in a liquid-based sample. Recommendations: Women with a negative cervical screening test result (no oncogenic HPV detected) should re-screen in five years.
How much does HPV test cost?
HPV tests, which start at about $30 but can cost much more, look for HPV in cells taken from a swab of the cervix.

How many types of cytology are there?
There are two main branches of cytology. There are those involved with the assessment of pre-cancerous and, occasionally, cancerous, changes of the cervix (mouth of the womb) such as in cervical cancer screening, which are generally referred to as gynaecological cytology.
What is inflammatory smear?
Inflammation. If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
What is HPV positive?
A positive HPV test means you do have an HPV type that may be linked to cervical cancer. This does not mean you have cervical cancer now. But it could be a warning. The specific HPV type may be identified to determine the next step.
Do smear tests hurt more as you get older?
One particular issue for older women can be that screening becomes more painful following the menopause. Lower oestrogen levels can cause thinning and dryness of the vaginal walls and it’s estimated that half of all post-menopausal women have these symptoms.
