What happens at the early pregnancy assessment unit?
The EPAS includes the provision of investigations such as blood tests and ultrasound scans. These tests will confirm if you are still pregnant with a continuing pregnancy or whether your pregnancy is non-continuing and you may be experiencing a pregnancy loss – Miscarriage.
When should I ring pregnancy triage?
Triage is the assessment area for maternity where we assess many needs, not just labour. You may be referred to triage by your GP, community midwife or you may contact us directly after 20 weeks of pregnancy, up to 6 weeks after delivery of your baby.
Can I refer myself to early pregnancy unit?
There are no walk-in slots or self-referrals. If you are over 14 weeks, you must contact the Maternity Department for advice.
Can early scan cause miscarriage?
There is no evidence that having a vaginal or an abdominal scan will cause a miscarriage or harm your baby.
What is the number for triage?
You can refer yourself by calling the triage direct line 0207 288 5880 or you may be referred by your doctor or midwife.
Can I ask for an early pregnancy scan?
A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period (LMP). We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks. If you are unsure of your dates or have irregular cycles we do ask that you have a scan two weeks after your first positive pregnancy test.

The counsellor will call you back to arrange a time to see you. The hospital chaplaincy service is also available for support and spiritual care.

LOCATION: The Early Pregnancy Assessment Service is located on 1 WEST, Level 1, Ward Tower Block at St George Public Hospital. Parking is available around the hospital or in the car park in Belgrave Street. REFERRALS: Referrals from Emergency departments, local GP’s, or self.
