How does GOCE work?
The platform and payload GOCE employs a drag-free attitude and orbit control system using an ion propulsion engine for continuous, closed-loop counteraction of the drag caused by Earth’s atmosphere. To minimise internal disturbances, the satellite does not include any moving parts.
What is GOCE mission?
GOCE TOOLS ESA’s Gravity field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission mapped Earth’s geoid very accurately, opening a window into Earth’s interior structure as well as the currents circulating within the depths of its oceans.
What type of satellite is GOCE?
The Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) was the first of ESA’s Living Planet Programme satellites intended to map in unprecedented detail the Earth’s gravity field….Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer.

What does Goce stand for?
GOCE (Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer) Spacecraft Launch Mission Status Sensor Complement Ground Segment References. GOCE is an ESA geodynamics and geodetic mission, a combined SGG (Satellite Gravity Gradiometry) and SST (Satellite-to-Satellite Tracking) mission.
What do you understand by geoid?
A geoid is the irregular-shaped “ball” that scientists use to more accurately calculate depths of earthquakes, or any other deep object beneath the earth’s surface.
Is Earth a geoid shape?
A much more complex model of the Earth is the geoid, used to approximate mean sea level. The Earth’s shape is nearly spherical, with a radius of about 3,963 miles (6,378 km), and its surface is very irregular.
What’s the real shape of Earth?
ellipsoid
The Earth is an irregularly shaped ellipsoid. While the Earth appears to be round when viewed from the vantage point of space, it is actually closer to an ellipsoid.
What is the actual shape of Earth?
Oblate spheroid
Earth/Shape
What is the original shape of the earth?
Even though our planet is a sphere, it is not a perfect sphere. Because of the force caused when Earth rotates, the North and South Poles are slightly flat. Earth’s rotation, wobbly motion and other forces are making the planet change shape very slowly, but it is still round.
Which is hotter sun or Earth core?
The Earth’s core is hotter than the outer layer of the Sun. The Sun’s huge boiling convection cells, in the outer visible layer, called the photosphere, have a temperature of 5,500°C. The Earth’s core temperature is about 6100ºC. The inner core, under huge pressure, is solid and may be a single immense iron crystal.
What caused the Earth’s shape?
Scientists using NASA satellite data found the shape of the Earth appears to be influenced by big climate events that cause changes in the mass of water stored in oceans, continents and atmosphere.
Is the GOCE data freely available on the Internet?
GOCE data is freely and openly available to everyone. A number of tools are available for visualising, processing and analysing GOCE data.
How is the gravity field and ocean circulation explorer ( GOCE ) mission?
ESA’s Gravity field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) mission mapped Earth’s geoid very accurately, opening a window into Earth’s interior structure as well as the currents circulating within the depths of its oceans.
How does the Goce gradiometer map the Earth?
GOCE’s state-of-the-art gradiometer mapped Earth’s geoid very accurately, opening a window into Earth’s interior structure as well as the currents circulating within the depths of its oceans.
What was the main objective of the GOCE mission?
The GOCE mission objectives were based on the unique capability of a gravity gradiometer to provide an accurate and detailed global model of Earth’s gravity field and geoid. This model served the following multi-disciplinary scientific objectives:
