When out and about I find the self-adhesives work great, but I’ll use a proper patch kit for any I fix at home. I clean, I sandpaper, I stick, I leave, I only pump inside a tyre and not just to see if it’s worked. Personally rather than the “I leave” step, “I apply pressure to the patch for about a minute”.
