How long does it take to walk up Roys Peak?
Roys Peak Track is an excellent 3 hour walk straight up the mountain to the top, it can be pretty hard going. It’s a 5 to 7 hour round trip walk from the car park to the top and back.
How hard is Roys Peak?
It is a steady 1300 meter climb to the top, steep in some places, with very few flat or downhill sections. The higher you go the better the views get. The entire length of the hike is 16 km. It took us four and half hours total to do the hike, including a stop for lunch and a stop for photos.

Is it worth it to hike Roys Peak in winter?
We decided to do the Roys Peak hike in the middle of winter for the sunrise view. It was cold but so worth it! Roys Peak is a challenging yet very doable hike that rewards you with incredible views over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. The decision was made to make the hike up in the dark so we would hopefully be at the summit for sunrise.
