The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is Australia’s oldest and most distinguished public art museum. NGV International houses the Gallery’s collections of International art and is open 10am–5pm. Entry to the NGV Collection is free; however entry fees may apply to special exhibitions.
Do you need to book NGV?
Bookings are essential for all school and student groups. To protect the wellbeing of our community, NGV has implemented timed sessions with limited capacities for visitors. Large school groups may need to be split over different entry times.

Can you buy NGV tickets at the door?
Tickets are available in person from the Ticket Desk. Tickets must be purchased in a single transaction. All ticket sales and right of admission is reserved and subject to NGV Terms and Conditions of Public Entry. NGV’s principal address is 180 St Kilda Road, Melbourne VIC 3004.

Can you take drinks into NGV?
Yes. You are welcome to bring any headphones, ear plugs, fidgets or other self-regulating devices into the exhibition, as long as they are hand held and do not present a risk to artworks or other visitors. Food and drink are not permitted inside exhibition spaces.
Why is it called the Ian Potter Centre?
Located at Federation Square, it is the world’s first major gallery dedicated exclusively to Australian art. Named after businessman and philanthropist Sir Ian Potter, the centre has a collection numbering almost 25,000 works.

What kind of art is in NGV Australia?
NGV Australia presents the history of Australian art from the Colonial period and the Heidelberg School through to contemporary art and includes photography, prints and drawings, fashion and textiles, decorative arts, and a suite of galleries dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art.
